MARK Fisher, the Chief Executive of the Government's new Sector Skills Development Agency, has joined the University of Huddersfield Governing Council.

Mr Fisher has had a distinguished career in the Civil Service.

His appointment to the University Council is as an independent member a person with industrial, commercial or employment experience - and is for an initial three-year term.

Mr Fisher, of Holmfirth, read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford, before joining the Civil Service as a fast-stream trainee.

He has since held various senior positions in the service.

In 1997, Mark was appointed HR Director of the Benefits Agency and latterly of the whole DSS Group.

He went on to play a central role in the successful merger of the DSS with the Employment Department to form the Department for Work and Pensions, and the merger of the Benefits Agency with the Employment Service to form Jobcentre Plus.
