ONE of Huddersfield’s most famous homes has gone on the market for the first time in half a century.

And it could be yours – if you’ve got a cool £749,000 to spare.

Award-winning Farnley Hey is famed for its distinctive architecture.

It was one of the first post-war buildings to be awarded a listed Grade II status by English Heritage.

The property in Farnley Tyas was designed in 1954 by architect Peter Womersley as a wedding present for his brother John.

Womersley was one of Britain’s most celebrated Modernist architects and many more of the buildings he designed are listed.

The property was one of the first open-plan homes in the country, with traditional rooms replaced by levels for eating, living and recreation.

Joe and Jean Battye, who bought the house in 1959, preserved the property’s integrity and it still boasts many of Womersley’s original fixtures and internal finishes.

The property received an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the couple opened it up to visitors and, on several occasions, camera crews.

Features include large floor-to ceiling windows, a double-height living room and an area known as The Dancefloor due to its polished floors and inbuilt audio system.

This was originally designed for John Womersley’s energetic parties and for recording live music.

Also admired is the architect’s exuberant use of materials, from York stone flags for flooring to lemon yellow Formica panels.

The four-bedroom home sits in 1.2 acres of land and boasts spectacular views over the Pennines.

Antonia Coffey, residential manager and valuer for Bramleys which is selling the property, said it was creating huge interest among potential buyers.

She said: “To be able to market something like this is very special for us.

“It’s a really unique house and has been designed by one of the best architects around.

“It is a landmark and one of those houses that people have seen and recognised.

“The interior is very traditional and in keeping with the time when it was built – it’s a bit like being back in a time warp but in a good way!

“It is generating a lot of interest and people from all over the country have been coming to have a look at it which is quite spectacular for somewhere in Huddersfield.

“The architect is exceptionally famous so we expect the house to be of interest to people in the industry.
