HUDDERSFIELD University chiefs have been inundated with calls from prospective students.

More than 500 have been in touch with them since A-level results were issued on Thursday, through the universities clearing system.

And with a healthy application rate already behind them, officials are confident of meeting targets for the next academic year.

Many of the would-be students who have been in touch have B and C grades, rather than D or E, which has delighted officials.

Phil Williams, the university's spokes- man, said: "We expected to be fairly quiet through clearing, as we were last year.

"But we have been inundated with calls through the central system.

"Others have been in touch with direct calls and we are trying to help people make choices about their future studies.

"We have been pleased with the general response to our recruiting drive.

"The calls this last two days are the icing on the cake," he added.
