PLANS for a temporary building for theatre rehearsal and staff offices at Huddersfield University have been submitted to Kirklees Council.

They will be erected at the Queen Street South annexe while work goes on to renovate Milton Hall.

The existing Students' Union, in Milton Chapel and Church Hall, is being transformed for the drama department.

The Grade II listed building is being stripped back to its original shell before it is restored to its former glory.

Plans for the two buildings - church and church hall - include the creation of two large performance areas. The work will also include the restoration of some of the stained glass windows.

The building should be ready for occupancy in two phases - phase one by September this year and phase two by June, 2005.

Meanwhile, building work has got under way for the final phase of the university's plan to bring all students on to one campus.

The £10m investment will be one of its more demanding projects.

Most work will be in the heart of the campus, with a new building on part of the Harold Wilson Building car park, which will house the School of Music and Humanities and the Students' Union.
