THREE new professors have been appointed at Huddersfield University.

Dr Lesley Jeffries, Dr Tim Thornton and Professor John Bryan have all been welcomed into the prestigious academic league thanks to their innovative work.

All three work within the university’s School of Music, Humanities and Media.

Dr Jeffries has become a Professor of English Language, Dr Thornton a Professor of History and Professor Bryan a Professor of Music.

Dr Jeffries, chair of the Poetics and Linguistics Association, developed her research interests in ‘the language of poetry’ and in ‘language and power’.

Her most recent work has led to her publishing a book on the role of female magazines in the creation of socially-accepted ideas about the female body.

Dr Bryan, Head of Music and Drama, specialises in early music and taught himself to play the viol, harpsichord, recorder and other renaissance instruments.

As well as performing throughout Europe and North America, he has recorded over 30 albums and is a contributor to BBC Radio 3’s early music programmes.

Dean of the School Dr Thornton specialises in the late-medieval and early-modern political and social history of the British Isles from 1400 to 1650. He has been recognised by the Royal Historical Society for his research work.
