Dozens of university and college workers will strike in Huddersfield.

Lecturers will be out on picket lines at the University of Huddersfield and at Kirklees College on Tuesday (December 3) and will be joined by other staff.

The action is being taken by 100,000 union members working across the UK in higher education.

They are gearing up for a second day of strike action on Tuesday December 3, in an increasingly bitter pay row.

Workers will picket 140 universities and colleges acrossthe country after rejecting a 1% pay offer that they claim would condemn them to a fifth straight pay award that is below the cost of living.

In Huddersfield, University and College Union members at Kirklees College will be on strike.

It is expected that the majority of lessons at Kirklees College centres across Huddersfield and Dewsbury will not run on Tuesday.

A union spokesman said: “A full ballot of members has taken place and a substantial majority – 71% – have voted ‘yes’ to take strike action in our efforts to secure a better offer, now and for the future.Š

“FE lecturers now lag even further behind our teaching colleagues in schools and universities and the prospects do not look rosy. No-one likes going on strike, but all we’re asking is for fair pay.”

UCU Regional Official (FE) for Yorkshire & Humberside Julie Kelley said: “If we don’t demonstrate opposition to austerity policy which in turn has reduced colleges’ ability to pay at least inflationary pay increases then the silence will be interpreted as acquiescence – and the consequences will be more work, less pay and so on.”

Librarians, cleaners, security and IT staff will join clerical, student support and career advisers in the walk out.

UNISON members will stand alongside workers from UCU, Unite and EIS, the first time all four unions have taken action together. The University will also be hit for a second time, with lecturers on strike.

A University spokesman said: “The University will be working hard to minimise the disruption for its students on the day of the strike.

“We are confident that all our staff will work together, as they have done in the past, to manage any local difficulties on the day.”
