The University of Huddersfield is helping redesign the town as a capital of couture after winning two accolades within one week.

Fashion design with textiles student Jamie Long’s designs definitely suited judges after he beat hundreds of other entrants to win an award at Savile Row’s National Tailoring and Design Award.

The news came just after the department’s Fashion Design with Marketing and Production course was awarded an elite accreditation by a top industry body, Creative Skillset.

The university has been teaching the subject for 20 years and in that time has helped many of its students make waves in the industry.

Ambitious 20-year-old Jamie won an award in the first ever Savile Row sponsored awards for his range of stylish menswear.

The passionate tailor wowed high end jacket and shirt maker Cad and the Dandy with two cutting edge woollen jackets inspired by his industrial surroundings.

Jamie, who is in his second year of study, used dramatic greys and yellows to mimic the colour and patterns of brickwork in prohibited areas. He won a work experience placement with the company and £500 cash prize.

He took to Facebook to reveal his win to friends and family. He said: “I can’t believe it, I’m in shock.”

Jamie is now working hard to redesign lab coats to be in with a chance of winning a prize in the Student Design Awards.

The design student said: “Working on menswear is such a good thing to do right now.

“At one time it might have been quite a dull field, but now you can really challenge conventions.”

The Fashion Design with Marketing and Production programme was declared one of only seven institutions in the UK to receive a sought after ‘tick’ accreditation in excellence.

Creative Skillset was impressed with the course’s approach to design and employability rate of graduates.

The university’s head of fashion and textiles, Dr Kevin Almond, said: “The philosophy of our fashion design courses has always been based on the skills that we teach. What we try to do is instil a love of all the activities involved in making clothes as well as designing them.”
