KIRKLEES Council has launched an urgent appeal across Yorkshire to meet a shortfall of parents willing to adopt in the borough.

The Kirklees 90 Adoption Campaign 2013, named after the 90 or so children currently in the council’s care system, began this week.

The number of children awaiting adoption in Kirklees has risen from 33 in 2009 to around 90 in 2012.

In the last two years Kirklees Council has placed 60 children with adoptive families locally and across the country.

But the council says more families are urgently needed to meet the increasing number of children entering its care system.

Clr Cath Harris, Kirklees Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “With more children than ever going into care, the need for adoptive parents has never been more critical, which is why we are appealing to people from Yorkshire and further afield to come forward.

“By being given the chance to grow up in a permanent, loving environment they stand the best chance of overcoming many of these issues and ultimately, thrive.”
