FORMER textile worker Alan Firth has become the first person to retire from Quarry Garage at Mount.

Mr Firth, who lives at Salendine Nook, was presented with a bottle of champagne and a clock by garage owner John Denton and his wife Irene.

Mr Firth, 65, worked for Gladstone's at Wellington Mills, Oakes, until its closure.

Since then, he has worked as a car valet for Quarry Garage.

Mr Firth, who has a wife, Val, and two daughters, plans to spend more time on his interests of gardening, walking and holidays.

Quarry Garage was established almost 30 years ago and employs 20 staff handling car sales, servicing and repairs.

Mr Denton said: "Alan is the first employee to retire from the company and we wanted to give him a special send-off."
