People who support a controversial proposal for three large turbines on Slaithwaite Moor took their message to Huddersfield town centre.

They say that in the most recent Public Attitudes Tracker from the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) 70% of people said they support the development of onshore wind – the highest ever figure since DECC’s regular opinion polls began in March 2012.

Supporters of Valley Wind Coop community wind project gathered to help get this message across at St George’s Square.

As well as forming the shape of ‘70%’ to demonstrate the strength of public support for onshore wind, the Valley Wind supporters, including many families and children, created a human, rotating windmill in the square. Their efforts were recorded by a film crew from the London-based Campaign against Climate Change group as part of a film on community energy.

Valley Wind Co-op says the three turbines will generate £150,000 a year for local community projects and generate enough clean green electricity to power the equivalent of 4,700 homes.

Steve Slator, chairman of Valley Wind Co-op said: “ The DECC opinion survey shows that a clear majority of people want to see more onshore wind energy. Onshore wind is clean, popular, and affordable. It can make a vitally important contribution to cutting CO2 emissions and the urgent need to move energy production away from fossil fuels. Supporting community wind energy schemes like Valley Wind Co-op is a positive way communities and individuals can take action on climate change.”
