POLICE officers were paid to get on their bikes – all in the name of charity.

The officers from the Valley’s Neighbourhood Policing Team cycled in tandem from Holmfirth Police Station to Kirkwood Hospice.

PC Judith Ford said many of them have been touched by how much the hospice does for its patients after friends and family members spent time there.

So 15 of them and two relief riders set off in tandem from Holmfirth into the centre of Huddersfield.

After a quick break and collecting money from members of the public, they set off again to Kirkwood Hospice in Dalton.

PC Judith Ford said: “Several of us have lost loved ones in the past 12 months which meant we saw the work Kirkwood Hospice does.

“We saw how they cared for our loved ones but also the support they offered to the family too which is just fantastic.

“So we’ve done this bike ride for them and hope we can help.

“In the future we’ll certainly consider helping other local causes if people want us to get involved.”

They raised £750 collecting in the town centre and hope to double it once all sponsorship has been collected.
