A SUPERFIT teacher has retired - but the last thing she plans to do is have a rest.

For Val James is to do a charity cycle ride from Land's End to John O' Groats - and then over the next few years go on cycling trips around the world.

Sixty-year-old Val - who also does distance running with Holmfirth Harriers - has been a teacher at Longley School near Huddersfield town centre since 1971.

She had a three-year break in the mid to late 70s when she had her three children, Bryan, Tamsin and Hannah.

Val - who has an 18-month- old grand-daughter, Freya - has taught domestic science and textile science. She was also the English co-ordinator and examinations officer.

She said: "I've a real interest in outdoor pursuits and organised several school camps.

"Money raised by the bike ride from Land's End to John o' Groats will go towards outdoor pursuits at school."

Val lives in Holmbridge and her friend, Caroline Batten - who lives in the same village - will be doing the marathon trek with her.

"We hope to do it in three weeks," said Val, who is also a member of Holmfirth-based ladies choir Vocal Expressions.

She also loves skiing in Switzerland and France.
