A celebration of 28 years of gay pride in Huddersfield takes place around town centre venues on Sunday.

The Pink Trail will takes place across a string of bars and pubs on Sunday to mark the traditional Gay Pride celebration.

Last year, due to funding problems, it was the first year that the annual Pink Picnic could not go ahead in Huddersfield. It had become a hugely=popular summer event for many years having been staged in South Crosland, Castle Hill and Greenhead Park.

But organisers rallied round when the event was cancelled and got five bars on board and the Pink Trail was born.

Now in its second year, the event will be run across The Wellington, Queens Tavern, The New Union, The Old Hatte and The Albert.

Organiser David Spencer said: “We are carrying on the tradition of celebrating Gay Pride in Huddersfield, which is usually the last Saturday in July.

“Obviously last year was the first year when the Pink Picnic did not go ahead and at the last minute we launched the Pink Trail.

“We had hoped to revive the Picnic but due to huge costs involved we have continued with the Trail and hope the community will come out and support us.”

Festivities begin at around 11am on Sunday at the Queens Tavern, Imperial Arcade and from 3pm at the The Albert, Victoria Lane, where entertainers will be playing camp classics and hosting the former Amsterdam Bar Re-union.

The Wellington, Westgate, will kick off its party at 4pm with a Wild West theme together with a karaoke and disco. The Old Hatte has got on board with the event for the first time this year and will host a barbecue and live DJ from 3pm.

The entertainment carries on until late at the New Union, off Market Street, with the venue’s popular Courtyard Party, a well-known Pink Picnic after party.
