A MAN was viciously attacked by a gang of youths in a village street after trying to help in an argument.

The 45-year-old was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for treatment for a badly broken arm, a broken nose and severe bruising.

He was attacked at Heaton Moor Road, Kirkheaton, shortly before 9pm on Saturday.

Earlier in the evening he had asked youths to stop throwing snowballs at a house at Newbury Walk.

Then, as he set off to pick up a takeaway meal, he saw a teenage boy and girl arguing.

He tried to intervene, but was set upon by a gang of youths.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "This was a nasty attack and the victim suffered a badly broken arm, a broken nose and a badly bruised face and body.

"We would urge anyone with information about those responsible to contact us."
