SIXTEEN-year-old dancer Victoria Haigh, pictured, has won her first major competition.

Victoria, a former pupil of Shelley High School who is due to go to Greenhead College, won the senior Yorkshire modern championship at Barnsley.

"I got through to the Miss Dance finals this year and have come second and third in other competitions but I have never won before," she said.

Victoria, of Shepley, had to complete a three-minute modern routine to Smooth, a song by rock musician Carlos Santana.

The dance was choreographed by her dance teacher Patricia Stoj, of the Patricia Stoj School of dance, in Lindley.

"I have been dancing since I was two years old and want to carry on learning - but I'm not sure if I want to do it professionally," she said.
