THERE will be dancing in the streets of Huddersfield soon.

That’s because Kirklees Council has backed plans for a one-off open air nightclub as part of the Festival of Light.

The town’s Open Market will double up as a club spot on December 7 and 8.

Led by French performers Jo Bithume, the al fresco disco is called Boîte de Rue and will feature live brass musicians and dancers.

Performances will begin at 8.15pm on both Friday and Saturday evenings and festival goers will be actively encouraged to join in with the dancing.

Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan said he hoped visitors will learn a few dance moves on the nights, adding: "Festival of Light is about bringing unique entertainment into Huddersfield and this will be a fun addition to the programme.

"We’re always keen to use different corners of the town centre and the Open Market is a new area for the festival.

"I hope visitors make the most of the opportunity to learn a few new dance moves and keep warm at the same time."

The festival attracts thousands of revellers to the town with 50,000 people taking part in last year’s events.

This year there will be street shows, live music, a light display and food and drink market in the town over the weekend of December 7-9.

After an impressive stint last year inside Byram Arcade, the Leeds’ Urban Angels return with a larger show at St George’s Square before and after the headline show Walk to the Stars.

Street shows run throughout the weekend on Northumberland Street from 6pm to 10pm. The Festival Light Garden returns to St Peter’s Gardens from 4pm until 10pm.

Events in St George’s Square run from 6pm each day, as does the live music stage on King Street.

The food and drink festival runs along Byram Street throughout.
