An 86-year-old man was rescued by canoe after water levels rose to waist height outside his home in River Street, Brighouse.

Details of the Boxing Day rescue emerged as a clean-up continued in the road.

David Hardaker, who has lived there for 60 years is now safely ensconced at his son Stephen’s home in Surrey.

His daughter-in-law, Jenny Hardaker said: “My husband Stuart and I finally persuaded him to leave.

“I think he said: ‘I have got a book and a torch and I am upstairs and I’m fine’ and I said: ‘No, we coming to get you.’ He finally left at 5pm in a canoe on Boxing Day.”
