A liquidator has been appointed for winding up collapsed Huddersfield based travel agent Villa Parade.

Representatives from Birstall-based insolvency firm O’Hara will collect the company’s assets after it folded on Wednesday, travel watchdog ABTA said.

Villa Parade ceased trading after the company was dissolved by its banks.

The firm, based at Highfields, sold rentals for upmarket villas around the Mediterranean, including Majorca from where it is believed the trouble started.

Villa Parade had been under investigation by ABTA for allegedly offering rentals on properties which it could not honour.

The investigation was dropped when the company collapsed.

It is understood that Villa Parade lost its contract for 93 Majorcan villas after failing to pay its villa owners.

The Examiner contacted Villa Parade at its Belmont Street premises on Friday morning.

While staff were spotted inside the building, the company failed to respond.

Villa Parade had blamed travel agent Travelopo for its collapse after taking an injunction out against the Somerset-based rival.

Travelopo has since hit back.

Company director Roger Fenton said: “Villa Parade have treated their customers disgracefully. They had established such a loyal client base who despite everything, continued to give them the benefit of doubt.

“This is an excellent lesson for all travel companies. If you look after your customers and treat them (with) the respect they deserve, they will stay loyal forever.”

Meanwhile Travelopo has denied it was struck off the ABTA register.

An ABTA spokesperson said: “Rental Republic, trading as Travelopo, had its membership of ABTA terminated on the April 14, with immediate effect.

“This was as a result of the company’s failure to meet ABTA’s financial requirements of membership which ABTA takes very seriously.”

But Mr Fenton said: “On March 31 Travelopo chose not to renew our ABTA membership...

“We are in dispute with ABTA over this.”
