LONGWOOD Village Group is looking for someone to spearhead major improvement plans.

The paid job of project manager will be supported by a grant from the national lottery's Heritage Fund.

When recruited next year, the manager will help seek funding from the national lottery and plan and co-ordinate the village group's major projects.

These include the restoration of the Mechanic's Hall, the creation of the Longwood Heritage Way and access improvements for the Longwood Sing arena.

Mrs Susan Beck-Sechi, chairman of the Longwood Village Group, said: "Hopefully we will be receiving a lot of money and want someone professional to see it is properly spent.

"We want somebody to help us pull the projects together and perhaps make a bid more specific."

Mrs Beck-Sechi said the group wanted to make the Longwood Sing arena accessible for people with disabilities.

"The mechanics institute is just about keeping going, but is in a very bad state of repair. We are hoping to raise funds to house a museum in there.

"We have consulted with local people in Longwood and have pulled in information from older people in Longwood about how things used to be."

The group also wants to create a heritage walk incorporating the industrial heritage of the area.

Mrs Beck-Sechi said that landscape artists would be employed to come up with schemes to enhance the views of Longwood Edge.

"We have had a lot of public meetings and had a big mailshot to receive public feedback on the ideas proposed.

"It is hoped that students from Huddersfield New College will get involved in the proposals.

"We may also set up a website on the history of Longwood."
