VILLAGERS battling a scheme to build a housing development in Highburton continued their fight at a planning meeting today .

Barratt Leeds plan to build the 112-house estate on the Southfield Mills site, just off Burton Acres Lane.

But more than 150 letters of protest have been received about their proposals.

The Heavy Woollen District Planning Sub-committee gathered in Dewsbury Town Hall today to decide whether to give Barratts the go-ahead.

Members of the public, the Parish Council and Civic Society were again able to put forward their objections as they did at a planning meeting in January.

Barratt needed to meet a list of conditions to gain the green light from planning officers.

But certain aspects of the application discussed by the committee last month were not satisfactorily resolved.

They included areas such as affordable housing, highways and education.

Parish Councillor Mike Greetham, chairman of the Southfield Mills Action Group, said:

"We are not saying `not in my back yard', but we do want to see the site developed so as not to swamp the village and clog the roads."
