SIXTY banner-waving villagers held a protest against a plan for new homes.

They fear the plan for 92 houses will change the character of Scissett.

They lobbied a Denby Dale Parish Council meeting where the development was discussed.

The council voted unanimously to oppose the plan.

Protester Carole Crawford said: "This is a result we wanted. We hope Kirklees Council listens when it decides on planning permission."

The protest was staged by Save Our Scissett, a group formed to fight plans for 300 houses and a supermarket.

Mrs Crawford added: "People are very worried about the new plan.

"There are only 2,000 houses in Scissett and Clayton West together, so another 92 will have quite an impact."

She said a key fear was that the new development would cause traffic problems on the A636 road through Scissett.

"Another 100 cars coming on to the road will worsen the situation," she said.

A public meeting to drum up more support for the protest is being held at St Augustine's Church in Scissett at 7pm tomorrow.
