YOUNGSTERS in Marsden may eventually get their own space in the village - more than 20 years after plans were first mooted.

Work should start in the spring on a young people's shelter on land off the Old Goods Yard, near Station Road.

And more facilities including a "kick about" area and all-weather pitch will follow.

Clr Margaret Fearnley, chairman of the Colne Valley Area Committee, pledged the scheme would go ahead and money was in the pot ready to be spent.

"The plan is to get the young people established there in this area with the shelter and the other facilities will follow as soon as possible," she said.

Young people will meet later this month with councillors, council officers and members of the Marsden Enhancement Group to finalise details for the scheme.

The £24,000 project will include the all-weather pitch, basketball net and young people's "mushroom" shelter.

Money for the long-running project has come from the Lottery's Children's Fund, Marsden Enhancement Group, the council and private donations.

Delays have been caused in the past because of funding, suitability of the site and a suggestion a transport museum might be built there.

Clr David Ridgway, a member of the Colne Valley Area Committee, said: "I have worked extremely hard to secure funds and ensure the project goes forward. I am determined it should now go ahead in the spring as planned."

Dorothy Lindley, chairman of the Marsden Enhancement Group, who has worked with young people on the scheme said: "We have worked exceedingly hard on it and we have had some very, very good support.

"It is all down to keeping the pressure going from residents, parents and young people themselves to eventually realise their dream."
