COUNCILLORS have voted to invest in village centres.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet yesterday approved £800,000 to be spent over the next three years.

Almondbury, Milnsbridge, Upperthong and Thornhill are in line for the regeneration work.

Council leader Clr Robert Light welcomed the new funding at the Cabinet meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

He said: “I think this scheme will bring improvements to areas which wouldn’t normally receive council help for regeneration.”

Regeneration Cabinet member Clr Ken Sims encouraged councillors elected in the four areas to come up with proposals for the cash.

He said: “We chose these villages because ward members were pressing for something to be done there, so I’d like them to put forward their ideas.

“It could be something like highway improvements or the renovation of an old well.”

Other parts of Kirklees have already benefited from the Small Centres capital plan.

New pavements and a pelican crossing have been fitted in Honley.

Clr Sims said: “It’s a really nice village and the work has made the main street safer for pedestrians.”

Market Place in Scholes has also been improved as part of the programme.

Improvements to Golcar, Mirfield and Birstall are due to start in 2008-9.
