MUSIC fans are expected to turn out in the early hours of tomorrow to snap up rare items.

Limited editions by some of the world’s biggest artists are to go on sale as part of national Record Store Day.

Staff at Vinyl Tap in St George’s Square, Huddersfield, expect to see scores of fans queuing long before the shop opens,

Hundreds of bands and solo artists have released limited edition singles, EPs and albums in aid of the annual event, which has helped boost independent music store sales since 2007.

Among the artists participating are Abba with an extended version of ‘Voulez-Vous’ on 12-inch and David Bowie with an original single version of ‘Starman’ on seven-inch vinyl.

Stadium fillers Coldplay have released ‘Up With The Birds’ on seven-inch, as well as hundreds of top-selling and cult artists including Arctic Monkeys, Bob Dylan, The White Stripes and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Pressings of all the records are limited to the hundreds. They can only be bought over the counter and cannot be reserved.

Vinyl Tap, as one of about 230 participating stores, has copies of each record.

Vinyl Tap owner, Tony Boothroyd, believes there will be queues from 5am on Saturday if it matches the success of last year’s event.

Mr Boothroyd said: “Last year we had one guy who had been there from 5am.

“A day like this is really important because it tells the record business that people are still really interested.

“It shows that there’s a lot of people who want real products, especially vinyl. It’ll be chaos on Saturday morning.

“We’ve got five to 10 copies of each. I’m sure people will be keen to pick up the Coldplay, Bowie and Abba records.”
