Volunteers are to run a Christmas and New Year bus service for the 22nd year.

The Green Party launched the volunteer bus service 21 years ago when bus routes were axed.

On Boxing Day the volunteer bus drivers will ferry people between Huddersfield Town Centre to Waterloo, Lepton, Grange Moor and Flockton.

On New Year’s Day the bus will link Berry Brow, Taylor Hill, Newsome, Huddersfield and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in Lindley.

Clr Andrew Cooper, Newsome Green member, highlighted the need.

He said: “People give up a few hours of their day to drive the bus and help people get around.

“We have around 100 people using it each year.”

Initially, it was funded solely by the Green Party, but it has since been awarded some funding from Kirklees Council.

The bus drivers are all volunteers and funding covers petrol costs.

Rodger Batley is also making sure the residents of the Holme Valley do not miss out.

He’s run a Holme Valley bus for more than a decade.

It links Scholes, Holmfirth, Thongsbridge, Brockholes, Honley and Lockwood with Huddersfield and HRI.

The Holme Valley bus runs on Boxing Day from 9.23 at the Boot and Shoe in Scholes and finishes its first run at HRI at 10.10.

It runs until 6.24pm, when it finishes at Marsh.
