A CARER from Fixby has been awarded an ambassador role for a UK charity campaign.

Mary Rogers, 59, is among the first 50 community ambassadors for the Carers Trust.

The trust was formed last year when the Princess Royal Trust for Carers joined forces with Crossroads Care.

Mrs Rogers, a volunteer fundraiser with Huddersfield-based Crossroads Care in Kirklees and Calderdale, is the carer for her daughter Elizabeth, 32, who has complex epilepsy and a form of dementia.

The local branch has more than 100 trained support workers providing flexible services for carers and those they look after.

The new ambassador roles are aimed at raising the profile of carers and the help available.

The role will focus on Carers Trust’s 2013 charity of the year partnership with the Co-operative which hopes to raise an estimated £5m to support young adult carers.

Mrs Rogers said: “I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to be so involved in the charity’s partnership with the Co-operative which will deliver a step-change in people’s awareness of our cause and raise the money needed to transform young people’s lives.”

Fundraising will take place at several Co-operative stores and businesses throughout Huddersfield including the town’s Britannia Building Society branch where Mrs Rogers received her ambassador status. The Britannia is part of the Co-operative Bank.

Crossroads Care in Mid-Yorkshire, based at Trafalgar Mills in Leeds Road, has a Children’s Day Centre at Oxfield Court in Dalton.

There are an estimated seven million carers in the UK of which, approaching 500,000 are aged 14-25 and caring for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems and cannot cope without their support.

Laura Vickery, community projects manager at the Co-operative, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Carers Trust during 2013.

“By working together we can make life changing differences to thousands of young people.”
