A LABOUR MP is being urged to vote against the Government's plans for student top-up fees.
Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford is facing the challenge from Elisabeth Wilson, who will be her Liberal Democrat opponent at the next election.
Dr Wilson said: "Kali Mountford was elected in 2001 on a manifesto pledge not to introduce top-up fees.
"If she now votes for them she will be breaking a clear election promise made to the people of Colne Valley."
Dr Wilson said it was vital the proposals were thrown out.
She added: "The Government are trying to make access to higher education dependent on the ability to pay. It makes a mockery of the Government's claim to be widening opportunities."
