It's official — Sir Patrick Stewart is stepping down as chancellor of the University of Huddersfield.

Sir Patrick – who is celebrated for his classic stage performances as well as TV and film roles, including Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation – has been the figurehead of the university for a decade.

Sir Patrick’s links with the University will continue as he will become Emeritus Chancellor – and he is determined to continue to act as an ambassador for the institution.

Professor Bob Cryan, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said Sir Patrick would be a tough act to follow — and we think he's right!

We asked you via Facebook and Twitter for your suggestions as to who should step into Stewart's shoes and take the role as chancellor, to preside over graduation ceremonies and lead the graduation parade.

Take a look at your suggestions in our gallery — then vote for you favourite in our poll.
