A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital with ‘serious head injuries’ following a crash with a car.

The 40-year-old was ferried by helicopter to Leeds General Infirmary following the accident on Wakefield Road, near the junction with Lascelles Hall Road, at around 9.45am on Monday.

The road was closed by police shortly after the incident and reopened at around 1pm.

The cyclist was taken to hospital by a North West Air Ambulance as both Yorkshire Air Ambulances were engaged elsewhere at the time.

North West Air Ambulance, also a registered charity, has three helicopters.

The charity is based at Knowsley, near Liverpool.
