THE lives of Spen Valley people are being celebrated with a ‘fame trail’ around the area.

Spen Valley Civic Society has created the walk of fame, which features 48 plaques at places of historic interest around the area.

The trail covers the sites of plots, battles, the creation of fighter jets and Roll Royces and the homes of revolutionaries, pioneers and even a hangman.

Each plaque states Spen Valley Civic Society Spen Fame Trail and gives a unique number and website address.

People can tap the web address – spen.mobi – into their mobile phone and the whole trail unfolds in words and pictures on screen.

The website is specially designed for mobile phones and it will tell you the nearest place to get a free trail map.

The project has been paid for by a £20,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The civic society was inspired to create the trail three years ago, having seen floor plaque schemes abroad, such as those on Hollywood Boulevard.

Chairman Max Rathmell said: “There’s only so much writing you can fit on a plaque. Using a website from your mobile phone is much more flexible.”

Treasurer Donal O’Driscoll added that the website had been carefully created to ensure it is easy to use and quick to access.

“We want it to be a pleasurable experience on as many types of mobile phone as possible,” he said.
