A SEARCH was continuing today for a 58-year-old man who is missing on moors above Holmfirth.

Andrew Lawrence, of Holmfirth, was last seen on Monday at the Londis shop on Woodhead Road at Hinchliffe Mill.

He had told his wife he was going walking on the moors, but it is not known which direction he took after leaving the shop.

His wife raised the alarm when he did not come home that night.

On Tuesday morning, the search for Mr Lawrence began.

A police helicopter swept over the moors between Hinchliffe Mill and Blackmoorfoot.

Around 60 police officers and members of Holme Valley Mountain Rescue team have also been searching the same area on foot.

Since retiring several years ago, Mr Lawrence regularly went for walks above Holmfirth.

Sgt Anita Patel, of Holmfirth police, said there is great concern for Mr Lawrence's safety.

She said: "We are concerned. There is no reason for him to go away, he was in a good mood.

" He doesn't tend to stick to the beaten track and he's spent two nights in the open."

"We are appealing to walkers and cyclists who use the moors who might have seen him."

Mr Lawrence is 6ft tall, slim with a thin face. He has short greying, brown hair and glasses.

He was wearing a brown jacket, jeans and trainers.

Anyone who has seen him or may be able to help should contact the police on 0845 6060606.
