Two walks organised by the Discover Huddersfield partnership this week will give an insight into Huddersfield’s radical past.

The first one, on Thursday, July 30, at 6pm is called ‘Walking with Women’s Suffrage’ and will follow in the footsteps of Huddersfield’s suffragettes as they took the town by storm.

The walk will be led by Jill Liddington a writer, historian and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds. Jill has researched and written on Votes for Women

since the 1970s. She is co-author of One Hand Tied Behind Us (Virago Press 1978, 1984 and 2000) which quickly became a suffrage classic. Her latest book, Vanishing for the Vote, was published by Manchester University Press in April 2014.

The walk will end at about 8pm with an option to finish with a drink at the Head of Steam.

The second walk is on Sunday, August 2, at 2pm when Huddersfield historian, Cyril Pearce, will explore Huddersfield’s radical past, discovering the places and events that were instrumental in reforming the social and political environment of the town and beyond.

The walk will include the protests and riots during the dramatic period of Luddite unrest, food shortages and factory reform. It will explore the places associated with the early labour and co-operative movements, temperance societies and anti-war protests.

Both walks begin at St George’s Square and will last 1 to 1.5 hours. There is a charge of £3 per person for the walks but no booking is required.

The walks are part of a series, details of which can be details of which can be obtained from local information points or by visiting www.discoverhuddersfield.com .
