Want to be a record breaker? A last call has gone out to make this year’s Pedal for Pounds charity bike ride the biggest.

The deadline for the sixth annual ride, organised by Huddersfield Town, has been extended again in a bid to top the 300 cyclists who took part in P4P4 two years ago.

So far 254 riders have signed up – almost half of whom have never done it before – and Town chairman Dean Hoyle wants to hit record numbers.

The two-day ride, dubbed Tower to Tower, will start at Victoria Tower on Castle Hill at 10am on Friday, May 1 with that day finishing 70 miles away at Blackpool Tower.

The following day cyclists will watch Town’s final game of the season against Blackpool and ride back to the John Smith’s Stadium.

The ride will be 140 miles in total and will see supporters and staff raising funds for the Keep It Up campaign, which supports Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Town’s youth academy.

The air ambulance was needed last month when Town defender Tommy Smith was knocked unconscious on the pitch at the end of the home game against Leeds.

He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary to avoid traffic congestion around the stadium.

Mr Hoyle urged riders to sign up before the new deadline on Friday, February 27 and said: “It’s great to hear we’ve got lots of first time riders taking part this year. The route was designed with those people in mind.

“Hopefully we can tempt back some of the veterans to beat the 300 mark, as well as some other first time riders.

“The importance of the campaign was really put in focus by what happened with Tommy Smith. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance did a superb job at caring for a member of the Huddersfield Town family, which culminated in him being back out on the pitch against Wolves.

“Every penny raised through our fundraising campaign helps to keep those life-saving helicopters in the air, as well as funding our Academy. If you can take part, please do so.”
