A war memorial at a Huddersfield hospital has been commemorated.

The memorial has been added to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest

The Holme, Holmfirth and New Mill Memorial Cross is sited on the NHS Property Services-owned site, Holme Valley Memorial Hospital in Huddersfield.

The cross has been awarded Grade 2 listed building status by Historic England, helping to mark the memorial’s significance and celebrate its special architectural and historic interest.

Sue Heeley is a facilities coordinator at NHS Property Services and works and lives within the area.

She said: “I am very pleased as a resident from the locality, to see that the memorial at Holme Valley has been given listed status. It is something which is of great value to the local community, along with the hospital site itself.”

The cross was unveiled in July 1921, by Colonel H. R. Headlam (Rtd), who had previously commanded the 5th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment.

Holme Valley Memorial Hospital provides a variety of NHS community services, including a convalescent ward comprising of 20 beds for adult patients following surgery or ill-health, a day surgery unit and a dental suite.
