A GRANT of almost £1.5m to keep Kirklees residents warm has been approved by council chiefs.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet yesterday released a further £1.49m yesterday for the borough’s Warm Zone scheme for 2010.

The funding for 2010 will be supplemented by a £1.52m grant from Scottish Power.

The pioneering Warm Zone scheme, which was introduced by Kirklees Council in 2007, provides free cavity and loft insulation to homes across the local authority.

The project is funded by Government grants and sales of Kirklees’ shares in Leeds-Bradford airport.

As of March 12, 126,905 Warm Zone assessments have been carried out and 45,300 households have received 54,882 insulation measures.

The project, which is estimated to save households £200 in heating bills each year, is also designed to cut carbon emissions by 1,400 tonnes each year.
