A TOUCH of the Continent could be on its way to Huddersfield.

Four businesses have applied to operate cafes on the streets, to take advantage of the summer heatwave.

And councillors are being urged to back the moves when they meet on Monday.

If the businesses are successful, it will mean more scenes like this outside the Merrie England coffee bar in New Street (pictured).

Dozens of people enjoyed a drink in the sun as the town baked in the heat yesterday.

The new applications include a renewal bid by The Coffee Shop, which has sited tables and chairs on Princess Alexandra Walk in the past.

Its application will be considered along with others from Elements Bar, the Media Centre and the Riverhead Brewery Tap in Marsden.

Elements wants to put four tables, 16 chairs and a large sun umbrella on the paved area outside its New Street premises.

The Media Centre envisages a similar arrangement next to its entrance outside the Northumberland Street building. And in Marsden, Mr Philip Holdsworth wants to use a flagged area outside his pub in Argyle Street as a cafe area and has asked officials to allow him to use tables and chairs throughout the summer.
