Have-a-go hero Asif Souhail, of Batley, who saved a man being brutally beaten in the street in Old Wakefield Road, Moldgreen, on May 7 2015.

A have-a-go hero believes he probably saved the life of a man being brutally beaten in a broad daylight attack.

Dad-of-one Asif Souhail, 29, saw four men knock their victim to the ground and stamp repeatedly on his head.

Asif feared they were going to kill him and pulled off three of the attackers but the fourth turned on him and butted him, causing a two-inch gash to his head.

The gang fled and so did the victim, who has not been traced.

Now police have appealed for the victim to come forward in a bid to help catch the thugs.

The attack happened in Old Wakefield Road, Moldgreen, at around 1.40pm on Thursday May 7.

Asif, who lives in Batley, said: “It was frightening. These lads were jumping on his head and I thought they were going to kill him.

“I wasn’t worried about myself. I just wanted to save his life.”

Asif, who has a two-year-old son, told how he and his wife were in a car parked on the roadside when they saw the gang approach a man wearing a baseball cap.

They were showing a mobile phone and suddenly set about the victim, forcing him to the ground where he was repeatedly stamped in the head.

Asif said: “I got out of my car and pulled three guys away but the fourth, a stocky lad with ginger hair, said: ‘What are you going to do?’ I told him he was going to end up killing him.

“He head-butted me and my wife got out of the car and said she was going to call the police and they ran off.”

By the time police arrived the gang and the victim had disappeared. A search by the force helicopter failed to find any trace of them.

Asif, who has given a full statement to police, said: “The officer is saying I am a hero for saving this man’s life.”

It is understood police are checking CCTV images.

Insp Jonathan Dunkerley, of Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, appealed for the victim to come forward and said: “This man stopped to try and help someone and was attacked himself.

“Clearly, we need to get to the bottom of what took place and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information that may assist the investigation to come forward.

“I am particularly keen to hear from the initial victim of this assault who has not contacted police and may well have suffered a significant injury.

“We can protect people’s anonymity if they come forward and information can always be given anonymously to police through Crimestoppers.”
