British customers of IKEA have been warned to make sure chests of drawers and dressers are secured to a wall.

The furniture giant has re-issued a recall of one of its most popular ranges after another toddler died - but for the USA and Canada only, write the Daily Mirror.

A total of eight children have been killed by toppling Ikea furniture since 1989.

All were between the ages of 18 months and three-years-old.

Ikea MALM range recall in the USA/Canada only

The recall comes after two-year-old Josef Dudek was crushed to death in May this year, when a chest of drawers from the MALM range fell on top of him.

The retailer has warned previously in 2016 that chests and dressers can be unstable but it has been criticised by an American lawyer for not publicising the dangers enough.

UK customers have been urged to make sure affected furniture is attached to the wall to prevent it toppling.

A full list of items declared dangerous is on the Ikea website.

Nearly 30 million pieces of furniture from the MALM range have been recalled in North America.

Josef, from California, died in May - after the range was recalled - and his family are suing the Swedish furniture giant.

Family lawyer Daniel Mann, who has also represented the families of other children crushed by IKEA drawers, said last month: "Jozef’s tragic death was completely avoidable.

"What makes this death more heartbreaking is the fact that last year’s so-called recall was poorly publicised by IKEA and ineffective in getting these defective and unstable dressers out of children’s bedrooms across the country."

Theodore McGee, aged 22 months, from Minnesota, was crushed by a six-drawer dresser that fell onto him in February this year.

IKEA issued safety warnings about the Malm range following the toddler's death, which came less than two years after a 23-month-old boy from Snohomish, Washington, was killed by a three-drawer dresser in May 2014.

Three months earlier, two-year-old Curren Collas was killed when a six-drawer Malm chest fell on him and pinned him to a bed.

Curren's mother Jackie Collas, from Pennsylvania, said at the time: "Your life, it will always be cut in half. Even if I live until 100, it's going to be before Curren and after Curren."

Ikea, Birstall

The deaths linked to IKEA chests and drawers date back to the 1980s, and IKEA said it has received 186 reports of products toppling over, according to the recall notice.

In a fresh recall notice , IKEA said: "Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled chest or dresser that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it in an area that children cannot access. Contact IKEA for a choice between two options: refund or a free wall-anchoring kit.

"IKEA will pick up the recalled dressers free of charge or provide a one-time, free in-home wall-anchoring service for consumers upon request."

Donna Moore, country customer relations manager at IKEA, said: “IKEA chests of drawers meet all mandatory stability requirements in all markets where sold and we would like to reassure people that IKEA chests of drawers are safe when anchored to the wall as per the assembly instructions, using the tip over restraint provided with the product.

"We are committed to raising awareness among consumers of the tip over risks and how to prevent them and are convinced that we can make a difference by sharing knowledge about safety in the home through our “Secure it!” awareness campaign."

Anyone who has not attached their MALM furniture to a wall has been urged to do so, and to get in touch with IKEA with any queries.
