CHRISTMAS shoppers in Huddersfield are being warned: Lock up your booty!

They are being urged not to give thieves easy pickings as they pile presents and shopping in their cars.

The warning comes as part of the Government's Let's Keep Crime Down campaign and police in Huddersfield have backed the advice.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan said: "It makes sense to ensure that shopping and presents are locked out of sight, in the car boot.

"It is also sensible to use secure, well-lit car parks when out shopping and avoid dark streets."

Callum, an ex-car thief, is involved in the national campaign.

"Christmas is always a good time to be stealing from cars," he said. "People make the most stupid mistakes when they're out doing their Christmas shopping.

"Because they are in that much of a rush, they sometimes don't even bother putting their alarms on. They are very forgetful, I've seen them leave stuff on display in their cars. They even leave windows open and don't lock their doors."

Police urged people to follow simple steps.

* Always keep your car locked, including closing the sunroof and windows, even if you only leave it for a few seconds.

* Don't leave anything on view - hide goods by locking them in the boot.

* Park in busy or well-lit areas near CCTV cameras, or in police- approved car parks.

* Consider getting an electronic immobiliser professionally fitted.
