Could these be the rising bollards set to close off parts of Huddersfield town centre?

Drivers best watch out — as the video above shows, taking them on can end in disaster.

The video of bollard crashes, courtesy of the Manchester Evening News, shows rising bollards in action in Manchester city centre.

It makes for interesting viewing after Kirklees Council announced a £1.2m plan to install "bus gates" , a series of rising bollards, around Westgate, Kirkgate, Market Street and High Street this spring, limiting vehicle access at varying times of the day.

Other drivers who flout the restrictions will be handed £60 penalty fines.

An Examiner poll has revealed that 74 per cent of respondents think the bus gates are a bad idea — place your vote below.

In a statement of reasons Kirklees Council says it will “help create an accessible town centre, improve the safety of pedestrians and improve the punctuality of public transport”.

The council says the bus gates will “prevent thousands of unauthorised vehicles” from entering restricted zones, adding: “These vehicles delay public transport, inconvenience shoppers and endanger pedestrians."

The idea was first mooted a year ago and the final plans can be viewed and commented on at Reception, Streetscene Service, Ground Floor, Flint Street, Fartown, or Legal Services, 2nd Floor, High Street Buildings, High Street, Huddersfield, by the reference DEV\BP\D116-1417.
