A letter writer in the Examiner recently had a go at eccentric Jake Mangel-Wurzel about all the stuff he has on the top of his car.

But the 78-year-old has revealed it’s just passed its MOT ... and a police inspection.

The correspondent from Salendine Nook near to where Jake lives on Lindley Moor wrote: “Why is it that the Huddersfield eccentric Jake Mangel Wurzel is allowed to drive his car with a plastic Santa Claus, a toilet, a chair and various other ludicrous items strapped to its roof?

“He’s been doing it for years and gets away with it. Is there one rule for him and one rule for everybody else where driving is concerned?”

But Jake revealed the Kia car has gone through its MOT.

He added: “The police have also taken a look at it and say it’s OK.”

Jake had been living in a caravan next to his home at Peat Ponds after it had been badly damaged in a fire six years ago.

But the static caravan caught fire as he watched TV in bed late at night. He managed to escape but his pet Jack Russell, Boffin, was killed which has left him lonely.

Jake hopes to have two more Jack Russells soon and two businessmen have offered to provide him with a new static cravan.
