The Huddersfield town centre tower blocks are going, going, gone... and you might find it hard to look away from this mesmerising demolition video.

A giant mechanical arm — named Messiah — has been brought in to take down the Lonsbrough and Ibbotson flats in Southgate.

The giant claw sends rubble flying as it drags chunks off the 1960s building as traffic makes its way around the ring road below.

People have been seen stood by the ring road, filming the drama on their phones.

The demolition is the latest stage of a huge contract to clear the Southgate site where the former Huddersfield Sports Centre once stood.

South Yorkshire firm Demex have already flattened the sports centre and other industrial building on the Old Leeds Road part of the site.

Demolition of Southgate flats, Huddersfield.

The plan is for Messiah to 'eat' the flats from the top down as the mechanical arm grabs chunks of masonry and glass from the 12-storey block.

The site has been cordoned off while the destruction takes place, with a special scaffolding platform erected near Southgate to prevent debris falling onto the pavement or road.
