The moment an out-of-control marketing balloon ‘dive bombs’ Waterloo has been caught on camera.
The balloon later broke clear of its restraint and has vanished.
The footage was captured by Dalton man Mark Booth, who said: “We couldn’t believe it was dive-bombing the road. We were amazed it didn’t hit a house or a vehicle.”
The balloon with estate agents Cornerstones logo on it caused problems last weekend.
A woman, who didn’t want to be named, said: “On Saturday about 7pm the balloon was obviously losing its gas and was diving down dangerously low.
“Then at 8.30pm it broke loose and went straight up to the clouds with what looked like the wire still attached.
“How irresponsible to leave this giant balloon in a residential area plus a main road over the weekend, without making sure it was safe.
“How many times do we hear the phrase ‘health and safety gone mad’, yet on this occasion I think health and safety wasn’t thought about enough.”
Justin Dugdale, director of Yorkshire’s Finest, the business and estate agency, said: “I am most sorry that this giant balloon or blimp seemed to cause so much trouble in Waterloo and apologise unreservedly to the local resident if it caused any distress. We were assured by the people who provided and delivered it that it would be safe and was securely attached.

“The blimp had been flying over our Denby Dale office safely for a week so we had no reason to believe it would not be safe in Waterloo when it was transported there.
“Needless to say we won’t we using the same firm again for any such marketing material. It appears that our blimp met its Waterloo in more ways than one, but does not resolve the mystery of where the blimp ended up.”
