Patrick Stewart has shared his thoughts on a gay cake debate, backing a Northern Ireland bakery who refused to make a 'Support Gay Marriage' cake.

In an interview on BBC's Newsnight , the Hollywood actor said Ashers Bakery had the right to refuse to ice a message they found offensive.

The bakery refused to make a cake with the slogan 'Support Gay Marriage' above a picture of Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie.

The McArthur family, who owned the bakery, have been found guilty of unlawful discrimination and fined £500 after the Northern Ireland Equality Commission took legal action.

They plan to appeal the decision.

In the interview, Patrick Stewart admitted he was on the side of the bakers.

He said: "It was not because it was a gay couple that they objected, it was not because they were celebrating some sort of marriage or an agreement between them," said Stewart. "It was the actual words on the cake they objected to. Because they found the words offensive.

"I would support their rights to say no, this is personally offensive to my beliefs, I will not do it."
