It is the most well-read snowman in town.

Made almost entirely out of books, the University of Huddersfield’s book snowman has become an instant hit after it was created this week.

Standing six foot tall and around three foot in diameter, he has taken pride of place in the middle of the University library, after being painstakingly put together by some of the 21 student staff this week.

Over a dozen of them built the figure, which looks as good if not better than the real thing and has replaced the service’s traditional Christmas tree.

It is the first snowman of its kind by the creative team, who last year pieced together a giant Christmas tree.

Kim Pickard, a shelving supervisor, explained how the students built the snowman.

“We got last year’s idea after seeing an article online and it went down so well we decided to do it again. The students had to cover each book in white paper and then built the structure from the bottom up.

“We used law journals that are hardly ever read and they’ll go back on the shelves when it comes down.

“They have borrowed a fitness ball from the university sport’s hall, which they’ve covered in webbing for his head, brought in the face and accessories themselves and it’s been a big hit already.

“We’ve had a lot of people taking photos of themselves besides it and it’s got really good feedback.

“It will stay with us now until after Christmas to give the library a festive feel and bring a smile to people’s faces.”
