Firefighters raced to Dalton this morning after a van caught fire close to houses.

The blaze at the junction of Broad Lane and Coniston Avenue was reported to Huddersfield Fire Station at 9.20am.

The van was completely destroyed in the fire.

Crew Commander Kerry Blomfield said: “A man in a white Vauxhall Vivaro was driving along the road when he noticed the engine was over-revving.

“He jumped out and tried to turn it off but to no avail.

“The fire was coming from the engine compartment.

“No-one was injured. At first there was a suggestion that the fire was close to a building but it was actually next to a hedge.

“Two pumps from Huddersfield were soon on the scene and we managed to put it out fairly quickly.”
