The mother of a five-week-old baby girl got a shock when the phone charger she bought exploded – just feet away from her sleeping child.

Donna Senior, 30, of Longwood Road, Huddersfield, said the drama happened in the early hours.

Mrs Senior, a support assistant at Reinwood J&I School, said: “Ella has colic so I was sleeping downstairs with her in a Moses basket so as not to keep her five-year-old brother Kieran awake.

“All of a sudden I heard a bang and half the iPhone charger had come away from the plug socket. It was all black and frazzled.

“I went back to the little shop in Huddersfield where I had bought it from.

“I was shaking, thinking of what damage it could have done to my family. The owner wouldn’t give me a refund but offered me another charger.”

It was not the first such incident in Huddersfield.

In September, student Christie Regan, 27, had a lucky escape after he plugged in his iPad Mini and suffered an electric shock which blew all the fuses in the house.

He was left reeling and suffered numbness in his hands and arms.

Christie and partner Kelly Porteous, 35, spoke out to warn other families of the dangers.

Mum-of-two Kelly, of Dalton, often lets daughters Jasmine, 12, and Aaliyah, five, use the iPad and said: “I dread to think what could have happened.”

Kelly said: “Christie was fine apart from the pins and needles.

“If it was me or one of the children it could have been a lot worse.”

Tony Downham, of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service, said they would be investigating the incident at Donna’s home.

He said: “There have been reports of house fires in London and the south east due to this sort of thing.”

He explained that the problem of counterfeit chargers was so great that containers of chargers arriving from China at Felixstowe and Southampton were regularly checked for any safety infringements.

He advised anyone thinking of buying a charger to buy them from reputable companies such as Carphone Warehouse or Dixons.
