A man has been jailed for 30 months after he had sex with a schoolgirl half his age.

Leeds Crown Court heard Wayne Daniel Carr was 28 at the time he let the 14-year-old girl stay overnight at his home.

She had told her mother she was staying elsewhere and it was only when she did not return home that her cousin found her at Carr’s flat in Towngate, Newsome.

Simon Haring prosecuting said the girl accepted they had unprotected sex while they were together.

Mark Brookes representing Carr said he had never been to custody before. He took responsibility for his actions and was motivated to address his attitude.

Carr, now 29, admitted sexual activity with a child and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Sentencing him the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC said he was satisfied Carr knew of the girl’s age at the time of the offence.

A pre-sentence report suggested he was flattered when the victim showed him some interest and “put his sexual needs ahead” of concern for the girl

The judge said: “She was not only a child but a vulnerable one and you were the adult.” Rather than taking advantage of the girl he should have acted appropriately to protect her.

He barred Carr from working with children in the future.
