HUDDERSFIELD’S MP has backed calls for a review of a major development in Huddersfield town centre.

Barry Sheerman believes a new Tesco planned for Southgate would not be good for the town.

The retail giant wants to build on the site of Huddersfield Sports Centre.

The existing supermarket at Viaduct Street would be flattened, allowing Tesco to use the land for housing, offices, shops and a hotel.

The plans would also see a new sports centre on the site of the Springwood Car Park.

Mr Sheerman said there had not been enough consultation on the development.

Clr Peter McBride agrees with the MP.

Speaking yesterday, the Labour representative for Dalton said: “In principle I do not object to a Tesco development, but its location is important. Their current proposal needs careful analysis particularly with regard to the non-food items which would be on sale there.

“Kirklees Council owes it to existing retailers not to overload the market. More importantly Huddersfield residents want a vibrant shopping area in the town centre.”

Clr McBride added: “I am also concerned about the increase in traffic on the ring road - which is already overcrowded - and Leeds Road, which is one of West Yorkshire’s most congested routes.

“I would also like the impact of noise and air pollution on residents around Leeds Road to be considered.”
