A PLAN to restore an historic bridge in Huddersfield has been welcomed.

The Mayor of Kirklees Clr Martyn Bolt hailed the planned repairs to the Locomotive Bridge, announced by the Canals and Rivers Trust.

He said it was a commitment to protect it for future generations.

Clr Bolt said: “This type of lift bridge is rare and a real feature of the canal.

“It is known locally as Turnbridge, as is the road, and is a significant part of our history and useful for education purposes.

“Hopefully this news will secure the structure for the future, and I would like to thank all parties involved in the project from the Trust and English Heritage”.
